Christmas time is here again! - A Big update

Hello and Merry Christmas! I have sooo much to tell you about so let me delve straight in. First, we've been featured on the new national Visa advert! We had photographers come in mid October and I spent an hour posing in the doorway. Here's the final shot that is being used on billboards across Coventry. Not long after this, we received more National coverage as we were heralded as one of the best UK small music venues by The Guardian! Many thanks to regular gig-goer Karen f

Top 5 Old(er) Ladies in literature

One thing is for sure, the lucky ones among us are going to get old someday. What better way to celebrate than to take a look at the glorious golden girls from our most beloved books! I've written a rundown of my top 5 favourite older ladies, some of whom are seriously sassy! Olenna Tyrell - A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin She's as ferocious as any lion when it comes to her grandchildren and her house. She even managed to verbally spar with Tywin Lannister, which n

The Top 5 best fictional BFF's

Friendship. It's important, right? Most of us would get nowhere and some of us wouldn't be where we are now without our friends. So which do you think are the most iconic friendships you've come across in novels so far? As a start to this new mini-series of blog posts "5 Best Fictional..." I thought I would kick off with the dynamic duos, those partners in crime... The 5 Best Fictional BFF's (Best Friends Forever) Sherlock and Watson - Sherlock Holmes Stories (Arthur Conan Do

5 things to read if you loved Twilight

I mean, WHO DIDN’T love the Twilight Saga? I can’t think of a single person on this earth who didn’t… I for one unashamedly enjoyed these books (and the last 2 films), and it doesn’t hurt my pride to say so! I was a massive vampire novel fan in my late teens. This post is for those of you who liked Twilight and wanted to branch out into similar stuff! The Morganville Vampires Series - Rachel Caine This series centres around Claire, an “exceptional” student who explores her ne

Ali's latest read: The Damned United by David Peace

Michael’s started to include the books Eve and I are reading in our weekly email update. It started me thinking about why we choose certain books to read. I can imagine Michael’s face when he saw that The Damned United by David Peace, was my August book! For me this book choice was all about nostalgia. For those not familiar with the book (or Martin Sheen’s brilliant film performance) the Damed United follows the controversial football manager, Brian Clough during his 44 d

The Books that Stuck: The 7 Favourite Books of my 20's

There are some books that stick with me; it doesn’t matter what else I read, they’re never beaten for the top spots in my memory. I can’t include the 7 that were my favourite from my childhood (because they’re all by JK Rowling) but here are those which helped me through my 20’s and in turn sparked my passion for other books! The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde I know, I know, Oscar Wilde - cliche much? But honestly this is one of my favourite books, probably ever. Just

What did Book Club think of: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Let's make this a regular thing eh? Our book club meets on the last Thursday of the month at the shop from 7pm. In December and January (Christmas break!) we read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Amy chaired the evening due to my illness and here's her thoughts... SPOILERS AHEAD! Ready Player One Last week, I unexpectedly hosted January’s Big Comfy Book Club as Michael’s stand-in. When asked to do so I didn’t cower in my boots as I normally would, but jumped at the chance. R

The Album Blurb: Music Should Be More Like Books

I'm a writer, a singer, an avid reader and a music lover. Well, in order to work with The Big Comfy Bookshop, you need to be at least the latter two. I don't think anyone's as much a music lover as Michael is though, and nor are they as hipster. When it comes to books, I'm very active in my hunt for the next read. I'm very much a fantasy kinda girl, so I scour the genre, looking for elements I love and reading reviews to find the next perfect read. I never look for the author

Books v Films - The Showdown

The argument whether books or films are better will be an ongoing war between passionate readers and cinephiles; just like the debate whether the song “Send Me On My Way” by Rusted Root is known from the film Matilda or Ice Age. So, let’s compare. Twilight the film was much worse than the book, but perhaps that’s just because of Kristen Stewart's permanent blank stare. It's a shame because more people hate it than love it, when in fact the books are alright. I guess some peop

Big Screen vs Small Page - Are Films Ever Better Than Books?

The madness surrounding the inhumane brutality of billing Watership Down on Easter Sunday has now died down, thank goodness. But don't think for a minute normal service has resumed and the subject of insanity has left the building, because the furore last week got me pondering the age old debate - are films ever better than books? I know I might not be the best person to answer this question. I admit it - I have a problem. I have unhealthy relationship with books. If a suppor
